Sclerotherapy is a gold standard treatment for fine thread veins, also known as spider veins, commonly found on legs. At Eden MediSpa, it is a simple and quick procedure, where we inject the spider veins with a sclerosing solution. This causes the veins to collapse and fade, leaving your legs with an even skin tone.
• Safe for All Skin Types – indicated for use on all skin types (Fitzpatrick I – VI)
• Fast treatment time – 30 to 60 minutes
• Virtually painless – the procedure tends to cause minimal discomfort, but we can apply a topical anaesthesia before your treatment if you prefer.
• Safe and effective procedure carried out by a fully qualified Doctor
• 70 to 90% improvement following treatment
Sclerotherapy involves small micro-injections with a very fine needle and a sclerosing agent. The sclerosing agent causes the lining of the vein to swell and become sticky so that blood cannot flow through the vein. The treated vessels then gradually disappear as they are absorbed by the body’s natural mechanisms.
This treatment can be used on all skin types. However, prior to your treatment, we will take a full medical history to confirm suitability for the treatment. You will also be asked to give informed consent. The procedure, its benefits and potential side effects will be explained to you. During this time, you are most welcome to ask any questions you may have. You will be provided with verbal or written after care instructions.
There is a small possibility of bruising. To reduce this risk, we advise you not to take anti-inflammatory pain-killers (e.g. Aspirin, Nurofen, Voltaren), St Johns Wart or Vitamin E supplements, for at least a week prior to your treatment, as they all increase your risk for bruising. Alcohol also increases your risk for bruising therefore we advise you to not have any alcohol for 24 hours.
The treatment takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. The sclerosing agent does sting during the treatment but this very quickly subsides. After the treatment the treated area will be red with some bruises along the injection sites, which will disappear in 7-10 days. Occasionally the vessels may be tender for a day or two after the treatment.
You can expect a 70-90% improvement in the treated vessels. The fading process is gradual, with the final result taking up to 3 months. Sclerotherapy will not prevent the development of new veins. However, the results achieved through sclerotherapy will be permanent. Further sessions can be carried out for new vessels that may appear in the future.
