Excess Hair
Excess hair, also called hirsutism, can sometimes be related to genetic factors and tends to be more common in individuals from Mediterranean or Middle Eastern decent. However, in a proportion of women, hirsutism is the result of hormonal imbalance - generally an excess of the hormone testosterone. Women do manufacture testosterone, but usually in very small amounts compared to men. Some women, however, produce larger than normal amounts, and this may lead to an increase in hair growth on the body and face. High levels of testosterone in women are often associated with a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Other common symptoms of this condition include acne, breast pain, weight gain and mood disturbance.
However, in men excessive hair growth can sometimes be the result of increased testosterone levels.
